Ludhiana police have advised city residents against hiring modified limousine cars, saying that these vehicles had been modified in violation of the Central Motor Vehicle Act.

On orders of the Punjab and Haryana high court, the district transport office and the traffic wing of Ludhiana police have been tracing such vehicles to cancel their registration.

On Saturday, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) Dhruman Nimbale said these vehicles are likely to be impounded and, if such a vehicle is challaned during a marriage, celebration would likely be cut short.

Given the opulence connected with them, modified limousine cars have become routine at marriages in the district. Several people in the district had jumped in to make a profit out of the business opportunity and modified vehicles to look like Limousine cars, violating the Central Motor Vehicle Act.

People ended up paying Rs. 15,000 a day to hire such vehicles. ACP (traffic) Dhruman Nimbale appealed to the people to avoid hiring such vehicles. “It would only inconvenience them if such a vehicle is impounded during a marriage ceremony. We don’t want that do happen,” he said.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has set a two-month deadline for the State of Punjab and its authorities to see whether brakes need to be applied to the practice of modifying cars into limousines for taxi purposes.

The deadline by the Bench of Acting Chief Justice MM Kumar and Justice Alok Singh came on a petition filed in public interest by Jugni Cultural and Youth Welfare Club against the State of Punjab and other respondents through counsel DS Patwalia.

The petitioner had, in fact, sought the issuance of directions to the respondents “to restrain the taxi and tour operators, who use private cars as limousine taxi by modifying and altering its body structure unauthorisedly”.

The petitioner had added that the conversion was carried “without sanction from the requisite authority and in violation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act”. In the process, they were “causing not only danger to the life of persons, who are travelling in the vehicles, but also to the public at large”.

Directions were also sought to the respondents “to take necessary stringent and preventive steps like impounding of vehicles, cancellation of registration certificates and imposition of fine as per the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.

Further directions to the respondents “to take similar action against all other unauthorised modifications and alterations done by the commercial vehicles” were also sought.

Taking up the matter, the Bench asserted: “In this regard, the petitioner has already made a complaint dated February 15, 2012. However, no action is stated to have been taken.”

Disposing of the petition, the Bench added: “Without going into the merits of the case, we deem it just and appropriate to direct respondents to take cognisance of the complaint made by the petitioner, and decide the same expeditiously preferably within a period of two months from the date a certified copy of this order is presented to them. It shall be appreciated if a speaking order is passed”.

One of the best ways to enjoy a vacation is drive there.Many tourist spent vacation to a place like Leh in the Ladakh region is twice as much fun as the trip itself is more exciting than the destination itself. Before you leave on the trip, make sure you get your car fully serviced. Change the engine oil, oil filter, fuel filter and air filter before the trip. If your tires are worn, change them before starting the difficult road conditions can shred tires. Change your brake pads too if they are due for a change. And make sure your battery is in good condition, especially for a diesel vehicle, the older diesel engines can take time to start in cold temperatures. If you have a car with such a low clearance, it may be a good idea to get an aluminum plate or screen in the crankcase and the box to prevent damage rock.
